Star and Key of the Indian Ocean {/məˈrɪʃəs/}

I know it took me a bit longer to write about it, but thanks for braving it the whole time! I've been working on my diploma thesis, which has become an absolute pain in the .... butt. Then again, as my brother would say - excuses. Lame excuses.
Mauritius is an island filled with happy people. Really. All the people I met were for the most part, very positive and having a happy feel about them. It might have to do with the fact that they live on a beautiful island. The island itself is actually quite small, being only about 2000 square km large (787 sq miles), but has an amazing landscape. It took us about 4.5 hours to fly from Maputo and the flight offered an amazing view of Madagascar. Upon landing, we weren't exactly greeted by the warmest of weather since winter has begun below the Equator. Nonetheless, our driver took us to the hotel in a minivan, island music on a TV screen included. If you want listen to the music while reading, click here. It definitely makes you feel like you need a coconut drink, laced with rum while having a campfire on the beach. Unfortunately, we were greeted by just plain juice.

Opravdu.

Well ok, so the weather wasnt that bad ...

Inu dobrá, to počasí nebylo tak špatný ...

City of Acacias: aka Maputo {mɐˈputu}

Hey Peaches! Hope you enjoyed the last post on my little safari trip! In case you are in the Czech Republic or anywhere rainy and dreary, I'm sure you'll enjoy the bit of the sun shining through the next stop which was a little bit of a different safari... more like the concrete jungle of Maputo. Maputo is the capital of Mozambique, placed at the very bottom of the coast. I placed a map so you guys could get an idea (and in case you were too lazy to google the map). If you take a look, you can see that Mozambique is like a triangle, with the capital being at the very south tip of the country, making it easily accessible by train to Swaziland and South Africa (not like I did that).
"_"

Actually this is a map which was marked by the hotel Southern Sun Maputo, where we stayed. I added a photo of what it looks like from the beach. People are extremely friendly and their local food is phenomenal. (Sorry, but no photos of the grub!)
"_"

Before the trip can start, here is a photo of Lake Malawi. If you didn't know where you were flying to (for whatever weird reason), fell asleep and woke up over this massive lake, you'd think that you are flying over a sea. It's just that huge! Just to get an idea, the lake is about 580 km (360 mil) long and 75 km (47 mil) at its widest point! You can go swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and the water is just magical! Hopefully, I'll be able to make my down there one day!
"_"

As usual, I have a collection of photos, so check them out after the jump ----->>>

Hakuna Matata!

Hey Peaches! Hope you've all been good while I've been gone! It was a bit of a hectic month for me. I guess if you were able to figure out my Instagram name ( paz.julie ), then you've seen that I've been down south. This time it wasn't going to SoCal (Southern California) but right below the equator. If you went on my Instagram profile, you probably saw that I was in Kenya, Mocambique and Mauritius! It was just really cool and awesome to visit these countries. I wish I had more time, but unfortunately since it was a working trip I couldn't spend more time. Regardless, I thought you Peaches might be interested in seeing these countries through my lens. Since I did over a 500 photos from these 3 countries, I thought it would be best to divide it.
This post is about the first stop in Kenya. Since I only had about 24 hours, I went on a safari instead of visiting the concrete jungle of Nairobi. We got to stay at the Ole Sereni which is placed right by the Nairobi National Park. Since winter has already begun south of the equator, it wasn't so boiling hot. Actually it was quite pleasant, since it was slightly muggy, with sun and a cool breeze. So if that's what a winter is like, then give it to me any time!
The animals we saw were mostly gazelles, antelopes, water buffalos, one rhino, some hippos in the watering hole and then the majestically beautiful family of giraffes. Lions usually come out in the morning, whereas the leopards just at night, sleeping their way through the day - so we didn't get to see them. All in all, it was a really fun experience. Our guide was really nice and always on the lookout to point out to the animals. I have to say, I would not mind having this as a summer job in such an office :)

Cau Broskvicky!
Zvířata, které jsme viděli většinou byli gazeli, antilopi, vodní buvoli, jednoho nosorožce, pár hrochu v brodišti a pak majestátnou a krásnou rodinužiraf. Lvi jsme neviděli, protože vycházejí většinou jenom ráno a leopardi jenom v noci, protože přes den spí.

Enjoy the 'safari'!

DisneyPeach

Good morning Peaches! Or afternoon... night? Wherever you are, I hope you've had a good start or a good day. Sorry to keep you waiting on the next post, its' just been a bit hectic for me. After my last spring 'beauty' post, I left for L.A. and ended up in the happiest place on Earth! If you guessed Disneyland, then you're right! I don't know how many of my readers have ever been, but even at the age of 25 (quarter of a century already?! *gasp*) I love love love going there. It always makes me feel like sugar and bubbles. I swear. It really does have this magical feeling, with Disney characters walking around and rides suitable for every age. I have to say my favorite is Pirates of the Caribbean, Space Mountain and the ultimate - Mad Tea Party. I haven't been on the Pirates ride since I was last there, which was about 10 years ago, so it was funny to see new additions of Captain Jack Sparrow, lurking behind every corner. Space Mountain was also great, especially since its' a roller coaster which operates in the dark with lights as stars, giving it a space-like feel. Unfortunately Haunted Mansion had some problems, so we couldn't ride it, but besides that and a few of the other kiddie rides, we got to enjoy the wonderful world of Disney!
*uff*) miluji, miluji a miluji tam jezdit!

The Cradle of Italian Liberty vs. Detroit of Italy

First off, even though it's 2 days later - Happy Halloween everyone! I had class on Friday evening, which was so great and I was so happy to have class on Friday evening. Not. Anyways, I decided to venture out into the world after class and bought some baked goods at the Le Ragazze, which is a phenomenal bakery. Instead of passing, I was tempted to come inside by the witches giving out goods. Of course with no Halloween discount, nonetheless, impossible to resist. I bought a chocolate biscotti which is typical for the month of the dead. It's a bit like chocolate gingerbread with nuts in the shape of a coffin. Besides the shape reminding you everyday of what might come without notice, it's quite lovely. I myself opted to look like a Mexican sugar skull, which I was sure it was going to be original. Then I saw that I wasn't the only sugar-head. Oh well. I'm not a big fan of Halloween anyways, because like NYE, it's a crazy night filled with abominable people. It's the one time of the year when girls can dress up looking like hookers and get away with it.

Martedi Mercato

Sometimes you are in need of a change. Even if it means that you arrive a bit late to a class that is not happening. Like today. For once I wanted to be on time for class, so I got up early and made sure everything was prepared. Probably even more prepared than the teacher. Upon arriving to school, I found out that the doors to the class were locked. So I waited to see if maybe someone will arrive. I waited in vain. After 30 minutes, I asked myself: "What is there to do when there is no class?" Well, it is Tuesday morning (11:30 am is still morning in Italy), the sun is shedding its' last rays upon the turning leaves, why not visit the market?
Every Tuesday morning in Via Eustachi, there is a market where you can buy almost anything. From stockings to fish (not a very nice parallel is it?), everything is for sale. There is no order. There is no such thing as a section for fish, section for vegetables and fruits and no section for clothing. The only difference between all of these stands are the prices and the marketing. By price difference, I believe my readers can understand clearly. By marketing I mean by how well the vendor is able to present to you his finest piece of fresh sea fish (in Milan), the warmest fleece jacket or even the best grocery bag you can buy for 1 euro.
While strolling along the street, it was hard not to stop and take a moment to not only observe but to listen to the rumble of the market, the sound accumulating with the whizzing engine of a Vespa or Piaggio truck filled with plants passing by the street. Although Via Eustachi is a long street, the market itself does not fill the whole, therefore it makes it a pleasant quick inhalation of what Hollywood has projected towards us as Italy. Might I even say that the Arabs and Bangladeshi have been able to quickly assimilate between these Italian merchants. While selling their artichokes from boxes having imprinted on them: Be in Italy, buy Italian products (in Italian of course).
I opted only for some salad from a local Italian farm (how local I don't know, but hey, the feeling is there), where 3 heads cost 2 euros. Then Israeli dates and Romanian walnuts from a Bangladeshi vendor. Talk about Globalization.

Camerino

Once in a while, you need a break from Milan. It can be smoggy, to noisy, too full of people and in general, it's nice to change location once in a while. Especially since you are in a country as beautiful and diverse as Italy. An area I like to return to when in Italy is the region of Macerata. Rimini and Ancona are probably the most significant cities you will visit when you are here, although it is better to visit it during the summer. Especially when a cold front comes in as has happened 2 days ago. On Tuesday, Italy was full of sun and its' warmth, but with the coming winter and last years warm winter, I think Mother Earth has decided to surprise us with her forces. With force.
On Tuesday, I was still walking around in shorts during the day, shopping with my trolley and at night I was walking around in a button down and a shawl, absolutely content. Now I wish I had something a bit warmer than a pair of tennis shoes. Specifically before going to Camerino. Thinking as I am going into the south of Italy, I will enjoy warmer weather than in Milan, I thought wrong. Snow on the way into the south of Italy is not a good sign. Nonetheless, upon arriving to Ancona, I was welcomed by a wind with such force, that it played with me, swaying me from side to side. I had to laugh, because I thought it quite funny to be swept aside, by the forces of the wind. I think other people watching had fun as well.
Either way, I got to enjoy a cappuccino and brioche con crema chantilly at Bar Centrale, in front of the duomo in Camerino. As freezing as I was, it was fun to watch all the locals greet each other before going to work with a quick coffee. I have to say it was also a pleasure paying for my breakfast, since it cost 1,50 instead of the 2, 50 eur I normally pay in Milan. On one hand it doesn't sound like much (paying 2,50 for a croissant and cappuccino) but for Italy, it's a lot.
I walked around to see a bit of the city and hope you enjoy looking at the historical city of Camerino!

me and my super cool trolley. total shopping diva

Universiday

Since I am here in Milan to study (seriously), there are usually events provided by universities so that students can get to know each other and the city they are living in. One of these events was yesterdays Universiday. The event was to be informative, letting us know what the city of Milan is doing and what services they want to provide for the students - foreign and from other cities of Italy. Of course what this particular event needed, was a gimmick to get the students to come. Not only did the mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, the famous journalist Beppe Severigni come, but also the special guest of the evening - singer Mika. I think that for the most part, all of the girls present went because it was an opportunity to see the famous singer.

Milano Milano

I don't know about you, but the weather here is a bit gloomy. Milano, as is San Francisco, is famous for its' fog. Unlike San Francisco, the fog comes in autumn and is accompanied by rain throughout the winter. They say that the sun should come this week, but I'm a sceptic and am so far enjoying it. Personally I love fog, and it goes along well with the sound of ravens (the size of chickens mind you) and the yellow leaves, crunching under your feet. So, with September being an amazing month, full of hot sunshine, there was nothing better to do than to explore the city.

Jour Deux - Trois Jardins

With the second day coming to light, I got to enjoy all the glory Paris has to offer. The buildings are absolutely stunning with their ornate details and for the most part, they are all of the height and style. This is due to the laws which have constrained the style of architecture since the 17th century. You can always recognize Parisian architecture because of theses laws, which have even attributed to the establishment of the Academy of Architecture in 1671. This being the first of its' kind in Europe has also led to the creation of the Prix de Rome in 1720.
Paris is filled with gardens, giving the city some urban refuge. Most of these gardens were made for the palaces, but now with it being open to the public, you are sure to enjoy a stroll through the perfectly manicured jardins and the fall leaves crunching under your (exhausted) feet. I was able to actually visit three of these wonderfully beaux jardins.
Walking around a city you do not know, gives you a better perspective as to how the city functions, understanding and meeting with various cultural experiences face to face. It's always my favorite activity to do if I am in a place for a limited time period. Of course, if I have more time, then I visit museums and other such institutions. Unfortunately I had to leave out the very famous museums Paris has to offer, such as the Musee d'Orsay and Louvre. At least I have something to look forward for the next time!

Vzdycky poznas Parizskou architekturu kvuli temto zakonum, ktere taky maji atribuci k zakladani Académie royale d'architecture v roce 1671.

After posting a bit about Florence, I thought it would be nice to change the subject a bit and show you a city of famous fashion houses,  the birth of many architectural styles, the belle epoque, pain au chocolat, macarons, strikes and of course the lovely word for love - amour. Oui, my peaches, I was in the beautiful city of Paris. Now to be honest, I was here when I was 16 and absolutely despised this city. Seeing it after so many years (say 8 ish), I can understand why there is so much love for this city. The architecture is beautiful (my favorite style) and the fall light bathing the already golden leaves, gives a golden glow to everything it touches as it sets...

I hope you enjoyed my last post, filled with pictures of wonderful Firenze! These posts is rather more about me being 'artistic' and playing with an application I downloaded onto my phone. It's called Hipstamatic and I'm sure for those acquainted with the millions of applications out there, know about it. I however am not. Someone always has to tell me about an application that 'I must download!' Usually I just nod politely and say 'thank you' for suggesting yet another piece of media I have no use for. But for once, this app has been of use to me.

Oh Bella Ciao!

Ciao Peaches! Finally after a year, I have decided it was time to come back from the living dead and just be one of the living. It has been a wonderful year, filled with healthy juices, travels, love and a big move. At least for a few months... Another reason to come back and tune in is because I want to show you what I am seeing while I am in ... Milan! Yes! Finally I am here in Italy, where I have always wanted to study and live. Since our faculty at the University of Economics in Prague requires us to study abroad for a few months, I knew what choice would be mine. I did apply for Florence, but that didn't work out. Yet Milan did. Although it's not exactly a city of historical sites (except for the Duomo of course), it is one of the capital cities of fashion. Of course I can't really come up to every single fabulously dressed person, I will try to do my best so that you Peaches can enjoy the show as well.
As an introductory post, I will share my birthday experience I had in the wonderful city of Florence. As always, Florence was just so wonderful. I didn't go to the museums, but instead just walked around as if in a dreamy haze. There is a fantastic blog about Florence though if you want to know more. For sure you should be checking it out if you go to Firenze or even if you are just interested. GirlinFlorence is the name of the blog and Georgette definitely makes you want to hop on a plane, slip on some espadrilles and cruise around on a Vespa! As for my part, I skipped the Vespa and used my feet. I hope you enjoy the photos! Leave a comment on what you like, what you don't and what more you would like to see on Downtown Peach!

Ciao Broskvicky! Samozrejme nemuzu prijit ke kazdemu skvele oblecenu cloveku a vyfotit, budu se pokouset o to, aby jste vy Broskvicky si taky uzivali(y?) prehlidku.

Aloha

As it is with everything in life, everything has its' end. We think of the past, usually with dreamy thoughts of how great it was. At least that's how it is for me. For over a week and a half, I have been reminiscing upon my recent trip to the Hawaiin Islands, specifically Maui. This year, I have been excited more than other times, due to my recent illness. It would be a time when the whole family would finally be able to get together and enjoy the fact that we have each other. Serious or tragic events in life remind us how quickly we can lose what we take for granted.
Luckily, this trip took place on a beautiful island, letting my mind and body regenerate. There is something magical about Maui and they even have a saying 'Maui No Ka Oi' - Maui the best.
The moment we got there, I felt my body slipping into the island pace. Waiting was no problem - we have time. Where are you going to rush? Why rush? Quickly does one embrace the pace and learns the motto of the locals: Aloha. What is Aloha? Aloha is hello, goodbye and love. So when you read on every local car or store 'Spread the Aloha'; it means to spread the love.
The first couple days, I had to adapt to the time change. Coming from Prague, it was a 12 hour time difference. Snoozing under a palm tree, with waves crashing onto the lava wall wasn't such a bad sound to nap to. The only thing which might disturb you from your daily nap is the excited scream of mainland children, calling to their parents to notice the 2 ancient turtles munching on the algae, growing on the first reef. Watching the appetite of the turtles only makes you want to have a snack as well. My choice in the afternoon was fresh mango, brought by Uncle Herbie. Uncle Herbie is our Maui ohana (family) and he tends to other peoples gardens. He brings us fresh papaya and mango. Not to long ago, he found a tree or respectively two trees which have grown into each other - a tangerine and lime tree, creating what he calls a tangelime. This we put in our afternoon Corona, after a sweet day of snorkeling at Black Rock on Kaanapali Beach. The beach meant for the king is a beach which has been developed for tourists during the 60's and since then, has taken off. With no threats of sharks, people spend their honeymoon, family vacation or retirement on this regal beach. Black rock provides a safe haven for snorkelers, looking for fish of all kind, including the small herd of beautiful spotted eagle-ray.
Thoughts of being bitten by a shark usually come when one goes to the notorious shark infested waters by the beach of Kihei, Makena and Wailea. These waters are best for scuba divers, but are not exactly the safest (in tourist terms) for snorkelers. Upon our arrival, we were informed by the local Maui news, that a young German girl had her arm bitten off while snorkeling in Wailea. The 20 year old died one week later due to her wounds. Although it is unfortunate for her and her family, there are certain rules one must abide by, before going into the territory of the mano (shark).
Never enter the waters after a rain. The rain washes all the garbage from land into the water, creating a buffet for the sharks.
Never go into the waters during dawn, dusk or nighttime, since this is when sharks like to hunt the most.
Always swim with a buddy. Sharks are less likely to attack a larger group.
Don't go into areas known for there to be sharks.
Never ever go into murky waters. Not even the local fisherman will continue his hunt in murky waters.
and last
You are in their territory. They are the kings.

Maui je necim kouzelny a maji i prislovi “Maui No Ka Oi” – Maui to nejlepsi.
Cekani nebyl problem – mame cas. Kam budes spechat? Proc spechat?
Black Rock poskytuje bezpecny misto pro snorkleri, kteri vyhledavaji ryby vseho druhu a to vcetne maleho stada krasnych manticu.
Vzdy plavat s nekym.

Cambodia - part 2 - Siem Reap

Once a week I go to Motol and have a tete a tete with the nurses. One of the nurses said that she enjoyed reading my blog and if I would like to go to other places than Vietnam and Cambodia, to which I answered: "Of course!" I am a terrible travel junkie and whenever I get the chance to go somewhere, I'm on it.
Last time I wrote about the trip from Saigon, Vietnam to Siem Reap, Cambodia. During the hot summer days I muse over that trip. It really was a fabulous trip. Well, not fabulous as if in fashionably fabulous, but you get my gist.
In the first part of my post on Cambodia (part 1 here if you idn't read it), I didn't really go into details as to what was it like. Humid, scorching weather, cheap stuff to buy everywhere you turn and tuk tuk drivers every 2 meters. We got to the hotel which was called Hotel Paradise. It didn't have much to do with paradise. Street lights are only in the central area, but once you get of "downtown", then it's all dark except for the rare hallogenic lightbulb hanging in a garage. Spooky. We finally got to our destination at midnight.
The hotel itself was actually modern. Compared to it's surroundings. The lobby had AC, yet the staff turned it off, so it was like entering a sauna. The rooms also did not have the AC turned on, so it was like having your own private sauna room. After 15 minutes, we finally got it going and I was desperate to take a shower after the long drive. I'm a pretty prepared traveler, so I had my own soap. That saved me, since the hotel soap were refilled mini bottles of dish soap. The next surprise was the brown water spurting out of the shower faucet. The hotel slippers were already used. Cambodian hotels recycle. Great. I had to laugh about it all and just pray there wasn't a creepy insect (cockroach anyone?) lurking around, maybe to fight a spider for the most comfy spot in bed. I aimed for the mini bar (checked to see if the water wasn't maybe a refill, which it was) and didn't think twice about downing the one mini Jack Daniels.
The next day I woke up slightly chilled from the AC, only to be blasted by a wave of heat once I opened the door to the hallway. The glass wall looking into the pool had the sun beating through it all day, from morning until late afternoon. Breakfast was served from 6 am until 10 am. The usual hotel food, so scrambled eggs and bacon were served by young Cambodian men, having an uneasy smile on their face. A buffet with Vietnamese and Korean food. I really don't like buffets. Especially if it's to feed a group of retirees on a field trip. Especially Korean ones. My grandmother is Korean so I used the few couple words I learned from her and they were apt to share the kimchi.
Leaving the hotel to go see the temples, we ordered tuk tuk drivers at 18 dollars for the whole day. I was later told we were ripped off, but I figured whats 20 bucks to me?
Entering the area where all the temples are located, you seem to notice the fact that it is cleaner than Siem Reap itself. Buddhist monks, tuk tuk drivers, young girls begging you to buy a Fanta for a dollar ("icey! col'"), monkeys picking at each other, watching their young ones and elephant rides for $20 one way (up the hill).
Coming upon the first temple of the day, one has to be amazed as to how these Khmer people built such buildings with its intricate designs.
The Bayon Temple is one of the smaller ones and you can read about here on wikipedia. I couldn't take enough photos! I already used up most of my memory for Vietnam and had 2 more temples ahead of me. It was there, that I had my first close up of monks. Some come from all over to visit these ruined temples and some live in the area. The orange color of their robes add a beautiful splash of color to the grey black stones.
After a solid 2 hours being spent at the first temple, we hopped into our tuk tuks to be taken to the next temple. I was excited to see this one (plus Ankgor Wat) since both were depicted in the movie Tomb Raider with Angelina Jolie. The movie displayed a mystical type feel, with a possibility of it even maybe feeling eerie. Unfortunately, it didn't have that feel. It might have been due to the amount of people hearding through all day. It was nontheless beautiful to see the fallen Ta Prohm temple and the Banyan trees overgrowing it.
By the time we were finished with the second temple, it was time for lunch. We thought we'd eat at a local stand but after inspecting the area, we decided against it. I don't think our disinfected Western bodies would be able to handle whatever was served with it's flies hovering above it. Even the tuk tuk driver told us in his broken english, that he does not think it's "no very clean". They took us to a more suitable place, where they even had running water in the restrooms.
The third and last temple on the list was the magnificent Angkor Wat. Surrounded by water, the temple is the largest religious monument in the World. The temples construction was initiated by King Suryavarman II and was finsihed 40 years after his death. Angkor Wat is the main reason 50% of the tourists come to visit Cambodia. I have to say I am part of the 50%.
It was truly amazing to see these temples, which have been standing for almost a millenia now, but on the other hand, it is like any other great civilization which has fallen to dust. You see the remarkable capacity these people once had and when you then look down from the carvings of temple, you see in what state the country is now.
Unlike Vietnam, Cambodia has never been able to properly recuperate after the war. Or rather genocide. What Pol Pot and the Khmer Rouge did to the country is still evident, even though it is almost 30 years since they have been in power. The people are like animals which have been beaten and tossed into a cage, but with no anger to use to fight back with. It is most unfortunate that these people must live with fear or indifference to life. On the other hand, when you are nice to the people and try to joke with them, they have a great smile to share and are much friendlier.
When we were leaving Cambodia the following day, I was thinking of what a shock I was in when I arrived to this country. Filth, garbage, people living in shacks usually with no electricity or running water, children carrying babies. It was a huge difference compared to Vietnam, but in the end, I felt a feeling of sadness that I was leaving. It was an adventurous feeling being in such a country and I think I just might have to go again some day...

Nemelo to moc spolecneho s raj.

On the way to the temples, we got sugar cane drinks served to us in a plastic baggie. It looked like urine and tasted delicious. If only I knew how I would feel a day after drinking it...
-

Coconut jello for a dollar. Interesting.
